Recently I observed a group of 15 grades 4-6 daycare children debating the ethical implications of paying a pro hockey player US$112 million for 12 years of work. As the debate proceeded, 1 became very impressed with the insights students brought to the table (e.g., many pro athletes need to be paid well because they risked their lives and their health over a very short career, whereas an average doctor may only make $10 million-if that-in the same time period]. I also admired how the students came to the conclusion that the issues were not as black and white as the newspaper reported (e.g., students thought most pro athletes are not overpaid like the player in the article, whereas they surmised that some sport doctors were being paid extreme wages). However, what impressed me most was the manner in which these students genuinely listened and responded to each other's arguments.
